Taken from St George CC weekly newsletter

It was not a great week for the cycling fraternity, especially St George club members that remembered both Greg Gee and Lance McDonald.

Greg Gee raced with the club in the 1980’s and his red flowing hair was pretty much part of a very good era, especially of junior competitors. Several of those juniors at the time that raced with Greg is Gary Rubie and also Steve Griffiths and the legendary Martin Vinnicombe. There was also John Clissold , cousin of Gary and Shane Sutton.

Greg passed away at age 45 after battling cancer for some time and our thoughts are with his Mum Laurel and sister Julie and Greg’s brother Stuart.

Lance McDonald was one of our super vets that never forgot the good times with the club. Lance moved to Coffs Harbour with work, maintained his strong association with St George and was a frequent visitor to the famous Graham Bennie 2 day tour.

Even when he was unable to compete, due to injury, Lance still travelled to be part of the official contingent and helped those that needed support.

Lance had been in training for a mountain bike challenge in a few weeks time and was to be joined by Gary O’Sullivan. Lance had a heart attack whilst at work in the hospital in Coffs Harbour but was revived and flown to Royal North Shore when he was making good progress before a burst aorta in his heart claimed his life. We wish the family and friends of both former members the very best

It is with regret that Cycling NSW advises this year’s Tamworth Two Day Tour has been cancelled.

This has been a difficult decision for the promoters (Tamworth Cycling Club) and Cycling NSW; one that has not been made lightly.

With the recently announced Federal elections scheduled for Saturday 21st August, many voters will be using the same roads as that of our tour creating potential risks that neither the Promoter or Cycling NSW would feel comfortable in attempting to manage.

We looked at alternate dates however with such a packed calendar of events, school holidays, World Road Championships coming up in Melbourne plus the National Road Series events commencing in earnest we could not find a suitable date nor resources to reschedule the event in 2010.

The Tamworth Two Day Tour is a much sought after event on the Cycling NSW road calendar and it will definitely be back on in 2011. We trust that members will be understanding in this instance and appreciate that these circumstances have proven to be outside the promoters and Cycling NSW’s control. Our riders and officials safety must come first.

This may provide many members with the opportunity of transferring their event entry to the  John Woodman Memorial, Ride For Life, Cootamundra or the Moree to Inverell events all scheduled around late August early September.

Alternatively members may seek a full race entry refund which can be made to your bank account providing you provide your account details to Linda Hamwi at the Cycling NSW Office or have the funds placed into your race entry credit account for use against future events.

Any queries please contact Linda on 9738 5850 or by email linda.hamwi@cycling.org.au

The first 3 months of 2011 are set to be huge with Cycling NSW promoting 3 National Track Championships with the support of the Bankstown Sports Club.

First off is the National Elite Track Championships, with the omnium event commencing Saturday the 29th of January and official National competition commencing on the 2nd-6th of February. This event is guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser as it will showcase Australia’s hottest talents in track cycling. Many riders would have competed at the recent Commonwealth Games- this may be your chance to check out the medallists for yourselves!

Just over a month later the juniors will take stage to show that the future of track cycling in Australia is in safe hands. The juniors will compete from Wednesday March 16th -19th.

And as if that wasn’t enough action - the masters will be out to play 2 days after the young guns to show us they still have it! The masters will be dominating the Dunc Gray Velodrome from Tuesday March 22nd – 27th.

With these A class events throughout the first 3 months of 2011, the Dunc Gray Velodrome is definitely the place to be for excitement, thrills and spills!

Scott Law, Kirsty Mills and Donna Meehan modelled the new Crimestoppers road shirts for Minister Michael Daley and Peter Price OBE of Crime Stoppers in Hyde Park this morning.

With the emphasis being on cycling safety when training and riding on our roads Peter Price OBE Crimestoppers says these new tops will prove to be one of the safest cycling tops available on the market. Cycling NSW and Bicycling NSW are partnering Crimestoppers and the NSW Government to get the message out there to all road users to promote safe cycling.

Shirts can be purchased by clicking onto http://www.bodytorque.com.au/new/ Have a rider in your bunch purchase one of these shirts and see what a difference in attitude motorists will have when coming across your group on their training ride.
DataDot Technology Ltd have come on board as a partner with Crimestoppers. More information covering DataDot Technologies will be provided to members over coming weeks.

Be seen and stay safe in your new Crimestoppers training road shirts.

This week’s Races

  • Round 1   warm up Scratch
  • Round 2  The Kirrawee Cycles 1.5km Wheel-Race
  • Round 3  ½ field sprints
  • Round 4  Point’a’Lap
  • Round 5  Round 5  Combines

Explain these races

Point'a'Lap- The race is run similar to a point score-however each lap is a sprint for first place only and worth one point. The overall winner is the rider with the most points.
Half Field 4 lap scratch/sprint.  Your Division will be split into two heats. So if there are 18 riders in div 2 there will be two heats each containing 9 riders. However the maximum in a field is 10 riders, so if we have more than 20 sign on in any division we will actually have 3 heats.  The race is run under standard scratch race rules. At only 1km in length this race is considered more like a sprint than a scratch race.  Here is a video, but please do not emulate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaW_2E_bPU0
