Active ImagePort Macquarie rider, Lauren Kitchen, has pulled off the biggest win of her short career, by taking out the U19 Women’s Australian Road Race Championships at Murrwillumbah.

The win was also a triumph for her team Real Aussie Kids.

Kitchen looked very much in control yesterday, and easily got the better of Megan Dunn in the sprint home.

“It was really tough out there today” Kitchen explained to CSN after the race, “but Megan and I were able to pull it together. We knew what we had to do and we worked together and it came through for us”.Active Image

Kitchen and Dunn managed to break away on the third climb part way through the first lap and from this point they maintained their advantage over the peloton which quickly began to  disintegrate as the climbs took their toll.

“I was going into the race to race the girls and give my best shot, and I wanted to hurt everyone on the hills because this is where I knew my strength lay, and whatever came from that I was going to be happy with”.

Going into the race yesterday, Kitchen’s form was very strong, partly due to the excellent guidance of her coach, Graham Seers, and the Real Aussie Kids Program.

Active ImageJust like the winner of the Elite Women’s race, Kristy Brown, Kitchen has been forced to do most of her racing against the men, but that turned out to be a real advantage.

“I’ve been training with the boys so I was feeling pretty much in form and hoping to do well here today”.

Lauren Kitchen will now be looking towards the Junior Worlds in South Africa where she hopes to better her 7th place in the Road Race in Mexico in 2007.

“I do better on the hills” she added, “And maybe this will be a big advantage in South Africa”.
