Calling all U19, Elite and Masters Women Riders

The 5th Goulburn Workers Club Junior 2 Day Tour will be run on 30th and 31st May. Last year was the first time the tour included Under 19 Men and Women. Elite and Masters Women were added to make the Women's racing more competitive. Goulburn Cycle Club is anxious to include them again but reminds riders that entries close this Sunday 17th May. The programe includes a Prologue and Road Race on Saturday with Time Trial and Road Race on Sunday. Racing is based at the fantastic Cullerin Road course, just south of Goulburn, which provides great safe racing.
The Under 17 Men's division has been given a boost with the inclusion of a 4 rider team from New Caledonia which will be accompanied by 7 times world champion and Olympic gold medallist Laurent Garne.
Goulburn Cycle Club has a policy of encouraging all riders, beginners to elite. Age divisions are graded where numbers allow. Even before entries close the U17 and U15 Men will be split into A & B grades. Under 9's and 11's are catered for on a very safe course.

The Great Hunter V2B Cycling Classic

What is it?
The Great Hunter Cycling Classic® - V2B Challenge® is a mass participation cycling event catering for all levels of cycling enthusiast from the serious to touring and recreational riders. Set in the picturesque wine country, this Exclusive Hunter Valley event offers riders the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of individual and team challenges circumnavigating central Pokolbin.
Given the vast spectrum of cycling experience expected at the event, riders can choose a fun, team, short or long course ride, with the flexibility of the course encouraging both non-competitive participation/ leisure pursuits and elite competition options - You Choose
What distance should I do?
A challenging but friendly 19km Fun Ride caters for those who may have a "little rust" on their body or bike, to a 60km short course ride for the more energetic/competitive, right up to the 100km Long Course for the elite cyclists looking for distance and Cycling NSW Road Series Points.
What about Teams?
There are two options for team riders. Teams will comprise 3 riders with one rider elected as Captain. Two Cups are on offer to compete for with the "Corporate Cup" held over 100km and the "Hospitality Cup" held over the 60kms.
*Corporate Cup entrants must be employees of the company they represent and "Hospitality Cup" team entrants must be active employees of the hospitality industry.
Where will I be riding?
The chosen circuit will comprise four of Pokolbin's most central roads with Broke Road, McDonalds Road, Deaseys Road and Hermitage Roads providing the challenge. The roads pass some of The Hunters finest properties and vineyards including HVG, Bimbadgen Estate, The Vintage, Gabriels Paddocks, Marsh Estate, Keith Tulloch, Casuarina Estate, Oakvale, Tyrells and Peppers Creek to name a few.
With nicknames already issued you will have the chance to come up with your own version. Riders will have the chance to
-
"RATTLE" along Broke(n) Road - Pokolbins highly used Broke Road might compare to thebounce and grind of old cobble stone streets in the Paris-Roubaix.
-
"MARVEL" along McDonalds – A chance to build some pace prior to a small but challenging incline down past the Hunter Valley Best Golf Course.
-
"DREAM" along Deasys & - A quiet stretch passing some lovely properties with a few small hills to put your legs to the test.
-
"HUM" along Hermitage – As participants head for Broke this essentially flat stretch might be a good spot to find some rhythm with your legs and enjoy the view.
No trip to the Hunter is complete without visiting The Hunter Valley Gardens who are hosting The Great Hunter Cycling Classic. The start and finish line at The Hunter Valley Gardens will ensure a wonderful spectacle for participants and onlookers alike after a challenging rattle along the Broke Road straight.
This unique event has a vision to grow into the future and become a tradition for both the local community and visitors alike. The Hunter Valley provides the ideal location and is perfected structured to cater for a large scale event of this nature as it grows into the future. And, like many of the Hunters Wines which get better with age so to will The Great Hunter Cycling Classic.
What to do/Where to go after the event?
Why not listen to some live music and have a beautiful lunch and a glass of Hunter Wine at Oscars www.thewinnerisoscars.com.au
Why not visit the Hunter Valley Gardens Australia's largest display gardens www.hvg.com.au
Why not enjoy some of Australia's finest wines at Tyrrell's Wines. Wines of character, flavour and above all, integrity www.tyrrells.com.au

V2B: Message to U15 Riders
Junior riders who competed in the B2B short course event please note there were no Road Series points on offer to U15 riders due to the distance of the event exceeding the recommended maximum distance allowed for U15 riders under CA event conditions.
These points were inadvertently put up on the points table and have subsequently been reversed.
Likewise there will be no points on offer for the Junior U15 riders in the V2B Cyclosportif event scheduled for the 24th May 2009 as the short course distance is 57km.
Under 15 riders are permitted to ride in the event as it is a recreational participation event however should exercise care ensuring they eat and drink plenty along the way. There is no time limit on the event so to those younger riders participating, ride, enjoy, have fun and enjoy the camaraderie.
U15 riders who have entered the V2B purely to chase points may apply for a refund of entry fee should they not wish to participate knowing there are no points on offer for the event.

GARRY “GUS” DAWSON
Cycling has been a part of Gus Dawson’s life for over 48 years. He was a great competitor as an amateur and also competed as a professional in his younger days.
After retiring from the competitive part of the sport he became involved with coaching, helping many athletes achieve their goals over many years. Gus is the coach of Megan Dunn our latest junior world champion. He has also helped and coached numerous other athletes along the way including his sons Brent and Tim.
Just some of the many athletes Gus has coached include the likes of:
Trent Asimus , James Largo, Brent Dawson his own son who became World Junior Champion, Andrew Taylor and the great Chris Pascoe who won two bronze medals and represented in world cups as a senior and of course Megan Dunn our latest triple world champion who has an enormous future ahead of her. All of these riders have won or been placed at national championship and have been selected to represent Australia.
If you travel the roads around Dubbo regularly you are bound to come across Gus on the motor bike working with athletes ranging from 10 years of age to whatever. He is a coach that gives his time to everyone. It’s not just about the elite.
Gus has experienced the honor of representing NSW at national championships on many occasions; his most notable achievement being a silver medal in the Australian junior scratch race championship.
When retiring from competition cycling Gus was selected in numerous NSW team management positions. For the last ten or so years Gus has travelled the world with the national junior team as the mechanic and has played a major role in the many successes of Australian cyclists at Junior World Championships; Australia currently being the number one junior nation for track cycling.
Even though he fancied himself as a first grade footballer being beaten in the Dubbo grand final by a point his passion has always been cycling. Gus Dawson is liked and respected by all who have come into contact with him in our sport. You will never hear anyone have a bad thing to say about Gus Dawson.
The sport of cycling has been extremely fortunate to have someone like Gus Dawson put so much time and effort into helping the sport go forward and giving his time to so many people and athletes over the years.
To his family Marg, Brent , Kate and Tim we thank you for allowing Gus to continue in the sport he loves over so many years and spending so much time with other people and giving without ever expecting anything in return.
Congratulations Gus.

Ben Isaken's report from France
Few weeks since I last wrote, I still don't have a phone line or internet connection at our appartment, so don't get much time to write emails. I've had a few top 10's recently, getting close to a win, and the form is improving. The last 2 Sundays I've gotten 2 6th places, as well as a 10th in a hard Elite Race at the end of April.

Sundays race at Serent was a stand out for me as I set a Personal Best, I managed to spew twice during the last half hour of the race, then again after the finish! It was the hardest I've pushed myself in a race this year. I managed to recover well and got some good rides in the last few days, so it's a good sign that the body is recovering well.
Our team is still without a win this year, so the pressure is on a bit for all the riders! This weekend I am racing a local 2 day stage race, the Tro Div Ster, a race that I've done every year I've been racing here. It is a similar parcours every year, hilly 1st stage, flat Team Time Trial and a few small hills for the last road stage. I am up for a result, the training has been going well and the motivation is there.
The week after, Sunday 24th, we are doing a 'Coupe de France' near Poitiers, about 400km South-East from Hennebont. It will make a bit of a change, riding against some different teams but will be good to travel a bit.
The weather is getting warmer by the week, been 19-20°C all this week, little bit of rain, not too bad though.
Cheers, Ben
News from Harper the Guide Dog- May 2009
I have just returned from four weeks annual leave. I spent it with my 4-legged friend, Tyson while Lindy rode her tandem bike from Cairns to Melbourne.
Lindy and I are home now for 8 days before she takes off again to the United States with her family. I will stay with the Gould family this time for two weeks. This will be my last holiday for the year, as I will have used up all my annual leave and long service leave!
It is great to spend time with my friends and check out different dog parks. We often meet new friends and have different dogs to play chasing with. However, one thing about being a celebrity dog is that people still recognize me wherever I go!
I haven't got a lot to report this issue, so I will let Lindy tell you about the Cairns to Melbourne ride.
A History of Cycling Control in Australia
The late John Drumond left an incomplete article on the history of Australian Cycling, his article covered NSW, Victoria and QLD. Here are some of his finding for the state of NSW
-
1879- Sydney Bicycle Club Established.
-
1882- Most powerful cycling unit within Australia
-
1882- First Australian Champioships held at Association Cricket Grounds, Moore Park; 10,000 spectators
-
1883- Balmain club formed.
-
1883- "NSW Amateur Cyclists Union" founded. The first controlling cycling body in Australia
After some years i have developed the history of WA cycling.
I have now completed my book titled "West Australian Bike Data" where this information can be found.
Yours Sincerely,
Ken Ward
