2009 Cycling NSW Road Camp Overview

Last weekend's (15-17th May 09) CNSW Development & Training Camp was treated to some climatic extremes with day 1 and 3 fine and sunny but a cold windy conditions blowing in for Saturdays road race which made the event a test of the toughest with the race climbing up into the hills south of Bathurst.

Seersy's weekend review

CNSW Bathurst Junior Development Camp 15th – 17th May

Our weekend in Bathurst was a great experience, for athletes, parents also us the coaches.
In all we had 50 people attend the camp, the Newhaven Park Lodge our new home for the next 3 days, Chris, Bernadette and Dorothia our hosts, they cooked up a treat and made us feel like we were at home.
This warm hospitality was needed as  after the groups arrival on Friday evening the heavens opened up, the wind blew and our Junior riders learnt more about themselves and the sport of cycling and how they need to prepare for all conditions that may arise as they strive to be competitive.

Friday Evening.
After dinner an overview of the camp, with a focus on road safety, we also discussed tomorrows training ride and course assessment for the Saturday afternoon Bathurst Club race.

Saturday Morning.
After breakfast the riders were split into 2 x groups and assessed the climb and race finish. We were assisted by parents and coaches.
Each rider set their own goals and race plan for the Club race which was a 36km handicap against all ages from the Bathurst club.

Saturday Afternoon Racing
The afternoon was a shocker, cold, wind and sleet greeted our Junior Camp riders as they set out the 4km journey to the race start.
Our girls on go, the boys spread throughout the field with the scratch markers Tim Guy, Blair Windsor and Angus Tobin in hot pursuit. Tim was looking to celebrate his Birthday with a win.
The Course included a 10km gradual climb which into the wind and freezing conditions proved to be very testing. This meant a 10 km descent with a cross tail wind blowing our sub 60kg riders in all directions whilst spinning and endeavouring to perfect the pedalling technique to maintain contact with their older and bigger gear riding competitors. This they did with a smile on their (or was that a grimace) the WOW factor of Tim Guys performance to take out first and fastest was a hot topic in the race debrief.

Saturday Evening
The race analysis and debrief prior to dinner was an interesting discussion with riders giving their brief in front of the group. The various versions in this debrief were extremely entertaining and added a media aspect to the camp.

After the roast chicken dinner the athletes had a Bicycle Maintenance and basic repair session. The parents enjoyed a Development forum with Mark Windsor while the riders watched the Tour De France.

Sunday Morning
Clear skies and sunshine greeted with temperature of -5 and ice covered cars and decent fog.
A recovery ride onto the famous Mt Panorama race circuit, unable to do a full lap due to a motor bike event, however we still got to ride Conrod and Pitt Straight.
After a shower and Dorothea's scones with jam and cream and home made cakes the group were entertained with an informal discussion by local Continental Team riders Blair Windsor and Tim Guy.
These 2 now young men discussed the highs and lows of their junior cycling career, balancing cycling/study/everyday life, where they are now and also their future goals.
Both boys are in a Continental Team Blair – Budget Fork Lifts and Tim – Nestle and both study full time Bachelor of Education Degrees.
Questions and Answers to Blair and Tim rounded off the Camp weekend.
A special thanks to the New Haven Park staff for making our weekend enjoyable, coaches Glen Carter, Mark Windsor, Mick Marshall form Bathurst and Iain Hume, Greg Scott, Nigel Irvine from Wagga for assisting in on and off the road, the Bathurst Cycle Club and parents and athletes for their participation.

See you on the road or maybe the next camp,

Seersy

 M7 Cycleway

Dear Riders,

Cycling NSW was recently made aware of hoodlum behaviour on the Westlink M7 Cycleway such as rock throwing, debris, and wire being strung across the cycleway. In an attempt to rectify this situation, Cycling NSW wrote an email to the RTA  noting its frustration and concern for the safety of riders. We would like to thank the RTA and M7 for their prompt reply, and the steps they have put in place to resolve these issue.

Response Email:

Good Morning Kevin
Your email was passed on to Westlink by the RTA.

Westlink shares your concern and frustration.

Westlink has investigated the incident and notes that the wire used was cut from the shared path fencing balustrade. We also note that incidents of anti social behaviour seem to be concentrated in the area between Woodstock Ave Glendenning and Sunnyholt Rd Kings Langley.

In an effort to improve safety, Westlink will remove all the wire from the shared path balustrade between these two locations. This work will be completed in the coming days. If we find that other areas on the shared path are targeted, we will remove the wire from these sites as well.

In addition to this action, Westlink will increase its security along the shared path by the Police and our incident response team.  We hope these actions will discourage further events. However, as you can appreciate; this type of anti social behaviour is difficult to control, and ultimately, is a Police matter.

Thank you for your interest and concern. Please feel free to contact me directly should you have any other information or feedback.

Regards
John

All cyclists please remember to be cautious and safe at all times on the road.

Thank you,
Aleece Longbottom

 Lauren Kitchen's report from America

On tour with the Australian National Women's Team

Week One

Well it all began on Wednesday the 13th of May when I flew out of Aus bound for Pennsylvania, USA. After a few days of traveling and a few too many airports we arrived at our destination located in Ephata, Pennsylvania. The team currently consists of Bridie O'Donnell, Belinda Goss, Carlee Taylor, Davina Summers and myself, As well as Martin Barras and Beth Duryea. I was lucky enough with Belinda to score the master suite so we are very comfortable in the largest room in the house.

Our first race was the Bank of America Grand Prix Wilmington criterium held on Saturday the 16th. The field consisted of many high status riders for the America racing scene. This was a criterium located in the main street of Wilmington, basically a rectangle course with very long straights and an uphill finish. Four of our team started the race being; Belinda, Bridie, Davina and myself. The field of 85 starters quickly dwindled down and after a few break aways and many attempts to split the field we headed into the last lap with only 13 girls left in contention. Belinda managed to step onto the podium with a 2nd place, after going down hard earlier in the race along with a dozen other girls. I finished 6th overall, we were happy with our first race overseas and first race as a team on this tour.

The following day we headed to Baltimore for the Kelly Cup/Bike Jam criterium. This was held over a large circular course with out any major corners being 1.1miles around. With very different conditions to yesterday we attacked the race differently, We sent Bridie up the road after only three laps and basically neutralised the front of the bunc, shutting down any attacks or chases. Bridie won the race after a 16 mile ITT, I finished 4th overall and the other girls close behind. Very happy as a team to have pulled off our first win and keen to get another few this weekend coming!

This weekend we are racing a 65km road race at pooley, followed by a criterium in Washsington on the Sunday, then on Monday the 'World-championships of criterium racing' at Sommerville before heading to Montreal to prepare for the world cup and tour.

So we have raced a few bike races, hit up the chocolate factory at Hersey's, been shopping for a few hours, won some prize money, found the best spots for internet coverage around our house as well as enjoying the fanastic views over the Lancaster county from our mountain top house.

Lauren
