Are you Australia's next cycling champion?

Australia has a rich history of producing talented cyclists in road, track and BMX disciplines. To ensure this success continues Cycling Australia has worked closely with the National Institute Network based in each State to implement programs targeting athletes with the potential to represent their country at elite World Championship and Olympic level. Athletes may be identified from both current cyclists along with talented athletes from other sports and placed into the cycling developmental pathway within their state.

In the past, talent identification and development efforts in cycling have been very successful. In 1993, a track cycling talent identification project unearthed three Junior World Champions in South Australian secondary schools. They included Alayna Burns, who won Commonwealth Games gold and competed for Australia in the track cycling team at the 2000 Olympic Games. Since then numerous athletes who have been unearthed through similar identification programs have gone on to achieve senior national representation. Emily Rosemond, Rohan Dennis, Bridie O’Donnell, Taryn Heather and Matthew Glaetzer are only some of these athletes.

Currently Cycling Australia in combination with the National Institute Network supports over 100 developmental cyclists nationally with the aim of progressing them through to eventual senior national team representation.

For those who are interested in recruitments targeting future Olympic Champions, information regarding current cycling recruitments will be posted on this website. Please visit this site regularly to keep up to date with such recruitments.

Alternatively, if you are or know an athlete who may have potential in the sport of cycling you can contact the Program Coordinator at joshua.sear@cycling.org.au or (08) 8360 5888 to discuss possible options. Athletes should also contact their State Cycling Organisation to identify and join a club to commence involvement in the sport.

The Australian Sports Commission in association with Cycling Australia has also produced this video for interested cyclists to get a better insight into Cycling Australia’s developmental programs:
