PRESIDENTS MESSAGE KERSTEN A CHAMPION FOR NSW TEAM
Throwing his hands up in victory as he goes over the finishing line is what most of us are familiar with when it comes to Benny K. But there is another side. Without prompting, without any discussion and without any fanfare Ben took it upon himself to ask personal sponsor and supporter "Champion" to outfit the entire NSW Elite, U19 and AWD track team for the Australian Track Championships and they accepted the challenge. So Benny will be looking at himself many times over as our full NSW team will have the Champion look! The arrangement includes travel bag, shorts, casual shirts and caps. This is a significant contribution from Champion and we sincerely thank them for their support and encouragement. Indeed, thank you Champion and Ben Kersten.
BANKSTOWN CARNIVAL A RIPPER Congratulations to all involved with the Bankstown track carnival. It was a great meet with some fantastic racing. One personal highlight for me was the NSW Womens Scratch Race. The ever improving and talented Kate Bates won the championship in emphatic style but it was the quality of the field which delighted me. Apart from Kate you had Rochelle Gilmore, Skye-lee Armstrong, Amanda Spratt, Toireasa Gallagher and Elizabeth Georgouras amongst the key protagonists. Women’s cycling has come along way and as we witnessed on Saturday night the quality of some of their fields is easily matching that of the men. Oh and it would certainly be remiss of me not to repeat this often quoted line but the support of the Bankstown Sports Club and the Bankstown Council was again very obvious. Attending was key representatives of the club and Bankstown’s very proactive Mayor Clr Helen Westwood. A Club Director who we shall only name as John offered to chauffer some of us home after the big event – now that is service! Great racing – great night.

![]() JOSEPH SUNDE MEMORIAL CRITERIUM Another superb day of racing and fundraising at the 13th Annual Joseph Sunde Memorial Criteriums which are dedicated to the memory of Joseph Sunde, who passed away in 1993 after an 18 month battle with leukaemia. The elite race was won by Jeff Hopkins.
Our thanks to the 160 cyclists who competed on the day and
to the spectators and supporters who donated so generously to
raise $3000 for the Children's Cancer
Institute. A special thank you also to the Caravello/FRF
Couriers riders who also donated their prizemoney, to Anthony
Spurgeon for donating his Discovery team kit which he won in the
raffle and to Cycling NSW for donating the race sanction fee.
And of course to the many sponsors, especially Trek Bikes
Australia who provided the raffle prizes and supplied the riders
with a complimentary carry bag and Discovery team water bottle.

BREAKING NEWS Dunc Gray Velodrome wins rights to host Track Cycling's Masters World Titles The Dunc Gray Velodrome has today announced that the UCI (International Cycling Union) has awarded them the honour of hosting the Track Cycling Masters World Championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009. The velodrome, located at Bass Hill in Sydney's South West, is the state-of-the-art purpose built venue that was used in the Sydney 2000 Olympics. The Velodrome's bid was submitted last year and faced strong opposition from Manchester and Los Angeles but at a UCI Board Meeting held in Germany last weekend Sydney was awarded the titles for three years commencing in 2007. Dunc Gray Velodrome's Manager, Peter Johnston said: "We are delighted at this win and look forward to hosting a great week of Masters Cycling in 2007. Photos ©:David Lane/ actionsnaps.com.au RON BATES MEMORIAL MADISON Three equally strong teams dominated the racing in the Ron Bates Memorial Madison at Hurstville Oval on Sunday night. In front of a large crowd the teams of Ben Kersten and Gavin Bates (Decks by Design), Steve Fitzpatrick and Peter Fitzpatrick (Kareela Tool and Die), and Chris Sutton and Warren Scott (Dynafurn) put on a show that was only decided in the last sprint of the final session. In a super fast race driven by Cofidis Professional Chris Sutton and the Fitzpatrick brothers, it took all of Kersten's sprinting power to ultimately succeed by just two points from Sutton and Scott with the Fitpatrick's only one point behind them. All credit to big Benny who was recovering from food poisoning and at the race end had no recollection of any of the sprints. The evening had a great turn up with competitive racing in all grades from U9's through to Elite. See the full
