AGM
All members are reminded that the Cycling NSW AGM will be held this Saturday the 20th May 2006 at the Bankstown Districts Sports Club, Greenfield Pde, Bankstown.

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT
Kerry Ruffels

President’s Message

This weekend is SUPER.  Well not quite, but we have made reference to it as the AGM Superweekend.  So what does a super weekend incorporate?  Racing and administration, both equally exciting events! Well ok, that may not be quite right either but the intention is to have a date and time that is more suitable to more people.  It is impossible for country members to attend Tuesday nights at 7.30pm thereby limiting the input our country members can have.  Yes, it can be argued that they can appoint a proxy but for a once off event it would be better to have them attending personally. We are hopeful that our programme that includes two consecutive days of racing will encourage our country members to make “another trip” to cycling’s home at Bass Hill.  A full schedule of events is listed elsewhere in the newsletter for reference and it would be fantastic if you could attend.  In fact we need you to attend.  Sport, like business can suffer mostly from perception and we are certainly no different.  Sometimes I am literally blown off “my saddle” when I hear what is “supposed to have happened” or what the Federation “said” etc.  James Bond may have had a “license to kill” but some members must think they have a license to “create”.  Mind you, most of it is harmless but it does tell us one thing.  Communicate, communicate, and communicate.  We believe we have been getting better and better at that and we now have some excellent means of disseminating information.  We will always have perception but it will be minimized – attending the AGM is another way of ensuring the correct message is heard.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Cycling NSW announces Staff Changes

Cycling NSW’s CEO is pleased to announce the following staff changes following the recent resignations of Kristina Short and Andrew Grant.

  • Graham Seers - Regional Coaching & Development Co-ordinator

  • Receptionist/Administration Officer – Chris Kazub

  • Race Entry & Web Site design and Management – Brian Crawford

Graham’s focus will primarily cover Cycling NSW’s  Regional Junior Development initiatives such as our Junior Membership Participation Program ($5 Kidz licenses for Juniors U13 years) and our Regional Academy Pathways Strategy targeting talented Juniors aged 13 to 18years for positions within our academy programs. Part of Graham’s responsibility will see him provide a structure that will lead to the development of Skills and level 1 coaches within clubs and to establish a Junior Development Mentoring program that will allow for Kidz license holders to undertake organized J – Skills programs within their club environment.

Chris Kazub takes over the receptionist duties at Cycling NSW as well as assuming  responsibility for the day to day office administrative tasks. Chris has worked with Cycling NSW for a number of years as one of our highly regarded volunteers.

Brian Crawford is a member of the Kooragang CC and has decided to make the move to Sydney to join Cycling NSW in what he sees as an exciting time for Cycling over the next couple of years. Brian brings with him experience in Web design coupled with a sound financial background. He takes over from Andrew Grant who has done a great job over the last couple of years automating and streamlining many of our previously manual processes.

We extend to Graham, Chris & Brian a warm welcome and trust they will enjoy the many challenges that lay ahead of Cycling in NSW.

Kevin Young

CEO

CYCLE SKILL COACHING COURSE.

Cycle Skill coaching courses are just about up and running. The first course at Penrith Regatta Centre on Saturday the 27th this month was full up in no time. The next will be on the Central Coast with another good roll up and courses are planned for Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie.

The Cycle Skill course is now a prerequisite for the Lev 1 course so if you wish to gain the Lev 1 accreditation you must gain your Cycle Skill accreditation first.

If you are interested in gaining your Cycle Skill coaching accreditation please email your interest to Barrie McLean and Barrie will add your name to the list of interested persons, as soon as we have 10 to 15 people in the same area we will organise another course. If country clubs can get 10 to 15 people together Barrie has the gear and will travel.

Organiser and Coach: Barrie McLean

Bookings are essential, please contact Barrie McLean: 9738 5850

FNWTR

News and Information

For Series 5

 2006

Pre-season news

It’s great to be back for yet another year of fun, frivolity and fast racing that is FNWTR.

What is new for 2006?

First night June 16

DGV under new management

  • Many of you may be aware that the DGV has taken on a new management style.
  • You may already know Michael Clancy as the smiling Duty Manager in the Handle Bar Tavern, Michael is now head of the DGV management team
  • I would like to take this opportunity in congratulating Michael on behalf of all FNWTR patrons.

Spectators

  • Spectators in 2006 will be able to view the exciting racing from the grandstand
  • The DGV management has allocated the bay on the start/finish line for FNWTR
  • It is a strict requirement that this area be left clean after each FNWTR

Team’s night

  • On two occasions this year the feature event will be a Teams night.
  • When you sign on you will be placed in a team that will consist of a div 1, 2, 3 and 4 rider
  • We will pick the teams randomly.
  • Normal racing is conducted
  • The final event will be a timed Italian Pursuit.
  • The winning team will be determined by the combined score of the 4 riders.
  • The winning team will be presented with significant prizes.
  • Individual riders will still earn standard points for the series point score
  • The idea of this night is to promote cross division friendships.
  • I guarantee that our Div 1 riders will be watching the Div 4 race intently and visa-versa.

Div 1 200m fly

  • On two occasions this year I will be having a 200m fly night for Div 1.
  • This will have to be done on a strict system to ensure that this event does not become a massive time consumer.
  • We will end up with a FNWTR 200m fly record holder
  • With the fly being conducted on two occasions Div 1 riders will have a chance to compare their form over the season.

Handle Bar Tavern

  • This year to encourage patrons over to the HBT I will be endeavoring to have a few jugs waiting for us at 9:30pm
  • Again this year we will have the cyclist’s special meal and video replay of the nights action.

Entry fee for 2006

  • There is a price increase for 2006
  • In previous year I have organised a Red Cross Donation through raffles and coin donations
  • This year Ray from Red Cross has requested a more simple system of a rider levy.
  • Additionally there was an extra cost involved in acquiring the grand stand for spectators.
  • 2006 fees are Adults $15 High School Students $8

Money troubles?

  • If you are experiencing money troubles please do not hesitate in approaching me so we can come to an arrangement.
  • I would much prefer to see you race than stay home.
  • In the past I have had reduced rates for families, pensioners and uni students in confidentiality.
  • I hope people have relised by now that I am not in this for the money.

Featured Wheelrace

  • Each week we have a featured wheelrace that rotates through the divisions
  • The Sponsor has naming rights
  • Wheelrace Prizes will always exceed $100 in value.

Special nights

  • As per previous years the last Friday of each month will contain a Madison
  • The second Friday of each month will be Kierin night which will also incorporate the now infamous Miss’N’Out Point score.

  • coaching starts at 6pm

  • Again this year the first race of the night will be a Junior development race starting at 7:05pm

Points for 2006 series starts week 1

  • For every week you attend you receive 10 points
  • In rounds 3,and 4 top 4 place getters receive 5,3,2 and 1point respectively
  • From Week August 25 place getter points are doubled.

So what is the "NSWCF Time-Blaster Challenge"?

  • In previous years one of the most competitive races was the night ending A+B combined 30 lapper.
  • 2 years ago I hoped to make this race even more spectacular by making every second week’s final race the "NSWCF Time-Blaster Challenge"
  • It has proven to be extremely successful.
  • The time for the 7.5km race continually increased and ended with a ridiculously fast 52km/hr race to conclude the series
  • Warren Scott Holds the record at 8min 43 sec
  • In this race the winner can collect prize money ($50) as long as the winning time breaks the previous record.
  • What if the time is not fast enough? The money jackpots for the next challenge in one fortnights time (making it $100).
  • This Race will start week 1. On the even weeks the A+B combine will have no prize money.
  • The first “NSWCF Time-Blaster Challenge" time is 9 minutes 15 seconds which is a mere 48km/hr. Beat this time and the winner of the race scores $50+

Divisions

  • Again this year I intend to have 5 divisions. If numbers substantially increase more divisions will be introduced.
  • Div 1- Serious “hard-core” top class athletes. This division hosts a number of Australian champions.
  • Div 2- Only slightly easier. This division hosts some former and current Master World medalists.
  • Div 3- Now we’re talking. This grade has fast racing for riders who race hard but train soft.
  • Div 4- Love your racing but hate to train. This division is for those who are learning or those who just enjoy the fun.
  • Novice/Div5- This is for first timers

Novice Grade / division 5

  • Last year a novice grade was introduced and proved to be extremely successful.
  • In fact we had one rider “Jason Roberts” who had his first ever race in the FNWTR novice grade and is now a competitive A Grader.
  • Novice races are usually of a simple nature and are intended to be less competitive.
  • Each night there will be 3 novice races
  • Novice riders are not eligible to ride the round 5 combines
  • Novice riders earn entry points but do not accumulate placing points towards the point score
  • Last year the above rule was mostly ignored this year it will be strictly adhered to.

Race Numbers

  • All numbers pre-booked will be ready for pick up from week 1
  • Guys check out the website www.fnwtr.tk or http://home.vtown.com.au/~pcraft/   to find out what numbers are taken
  • If you had a number last year that’s no guarantee that it will be yours this year.
  • You have to book your number with the information you want on it.
  • Line one: Name or nick name
  • Line two: Number
  • Line three: Sponsor or Club.

The Australian Institute of Sport Talent Search Program is conducting an exciting project looking to identify females with persistence and determination to succeed in CROSS COUNTRY MOUNTAIN BIKING.

We are seeking females aged between 17 to 27 years old (parental consent required if <18 years old) with experience riding a bicycle (road, track, BMX, MTB) and who live in Victoria, NSW or the ACT (ACT residents: if you are willing to travel to Sydney for testing).

The “Dirt Roads to London” initiative aims to identify the most talented females who could potentially represent Australia at the 2012 Olympics Games in London and provide them with the opportunities to become nationally and internationally competitive mountain bikers. The Australian Institute of Sport Talent Search Program will provide coaching from some of the best mountain bike coaches in Australia, training and education camps and assistance with access to competition.

We are looking for a pool of approximately 20 athletes that have the physical and mental endurance to go the distance!

Log on to our website for further information regarding the testing locations and register your interest before 17th April 2006 at: www.ais.org.au/talent/cycling/
